Study Type

Cross-sectional nationally representative survey

About This Dataset

Vitamin B12 and methylmalonic acid are not available in the NHANES 2017-2018 or 2017-March 2020 public laboratory files. LabNorms uses NHANES 2013-2014 for these analytes, with the cycle's published two-year MEC weight WTMEC2YR applied directly. These estimates should be read as older-cycle population distributions rather than current-cycle estimates.

Limitations

  • US population only (distributions may differ in other countries)
  • Cross-sectional design cannot establish causal relationships
  • Data from 2013-2014; distributions may have shifted in the intervening years
  • Self-reported supplement use is not used to exclude participants because NHANES does not capture supplementation reliably enough for consistent exclusion
  • Vitamin B12 data were adjusted by NHANES using a Deming regression after quality-control shifts were identified
