About This Dataset
Thyroid hormone data (TSH, Total T4, Free T4, Total T3) was collected in NHANES as part of the Thyroid Profile component. It was measured on a one-third random subsample of participants (Subsample A) rather than the full MEC sample. Thyroid data was collected in 2007-2008 (THYROD_E), 2009-2010 (THYROD_F), and 2011-2012 (THYROD_G) but was discontinued after 2012 and is not available in more recent NHANES cycles. LabNorms pools the 2009-2010 and 2011-2012 cycles after confirming distributional equivalence between cycles. The two-year subsample weight WTSA2YR is divided by 2 when pooling to maintain correct population-level estimates.
Limitations
- US population only (distributions may differ in other countries)
- Cross-sectional design cannot establish causal relationships
- One-third subsample yields smaller per-slice n than full MEC analytes
- Data from 2009-2012; distributions may have shifted in the intervening years
- Thyroid data is not available in NHANES cycles after 2012
